Linux vs bsd database shootout! Sort of.
In celebration of improved ULE performance I intend to do a Linux vs FreeBSD mysql super-smack shootout! I have to install fedora core 6 on my 8way opteron as part of a contract I'm doing. So whatever testing I do will be based off of fedora core. Although I suspect I can upgrade the kernel, install optional packages, etc. without disturbing things for work.

So the problem with this is I don't know a thing about linux and I don't know a thing about mysql. I'd like suggestions for mysql tuning, linux kernel tuning, and any tests other than super-smack select-key.smack that would be interesting. Linux and BSD are on different partitions on the same disk array so I'm not sure if any disk throughput tests will be fair. BSD has a better position in the array and a much larger partition. I could buy a single, identical sata drive for each os for io tests to be fair but one drive doesn't feed 8 procs well.

I'm presently working on three different contracts (and training to race again!), so this will happen as it is convenient. I'll post updates as I go though.

I can help tuning if you'd like.

Also, look into:
http://sysbench.sourceforge.net/

That was written primarily for benchmarking MySQL, as all its access patterns mimic those of MySQL, but is much easier to build/run. (Turns out kernel developers don't like bug reports involving complicated MySQL setups as the instructions to reproduce bugs and performance regressions, hence sysbench...)

Hey thanks. I was thinking of you when I solicited help.

I'll let you know when I'm ready to go. Having some trouble even installing right now. Client requires xfs and that may be to blame.

Hi! I discovered your LJ thanks to Ukrainian FreeBSD mailing list. Good job, thank you so much!

May I ask you, just in case the answer is obvious but I've just missed it. We have an OTRS installation here (see http://otrs.org ) w/mysql on a 2-CPU Xeon box. As soon as the system has become more heavily used, we are getting slooooow performance. MySQL eats 1 CPU completely. I'm just wondering is there a recommended way to increase performance. FreeBSD is 6-STABLE w/PAE (6Gb RAM) MySQL is 5.0.37 built straight from ports. Maybe you'll be so kind dropping a few words in suggestion? Thanks in advanse!
