What does it mean when grub hangs at "GRUB "?

Details behind the cut

I installed fedora 6 on my opteron. It has one hardware raid array and one ide disk. Installing to the raid array hung every time so I just decided to give it the whole ide disk, allowing grub to install to the head of this disk. The BIOS tries to boot off of the raid array and the freebsd boot loader redirects to grub which then hangs.

If I change the bios boot order so that the ide drive is first grub boots but the kernel panics with some errors about a corrupt ext3. Looks like it can't change the root from the little boot partition to the larger volume for some reason.
